Here are the highlights from our August 20th, 2019 meeting.
RYLA Students Visit Our Club
This year's RYLA students speak about what camp meant to them.
The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) was originally developed in Australia in 1959. It was then adopted by Rotary International in 1971 as an official function for Rotary Clubs and Districts.
Our own district (then #610) developed its first RYLA camp at Camp Rotary in 1974. It has held an annual camp ever since. From 1974-1989 the camp was only for male students. Since 1990 it has been co-educational.
RYLA aims to:
Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
Encourage leadership of youth by youth;
Recognise publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
Every RYLA program covers the following core topics:
Fundamentals of leadership
Ethics of positive leadership
Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
Problem-solving and conflict management
Rotary's purpose and service to the community
Building self-confidence and self-esteem
Elements of community and global citizenship
This year's participants sponsored by our club are:
1. Sophia Reinhardt a Senior at Bangor John Glenn High School
2. Landon Irwin a Senior at Bay City Central High School
3. Noah Bach a Junior at Essexville-Hampton Garber High School.
Each of them spoke about what RYLA meant to them and what their camp experience was like. They further explained what they learned about leadership, living by the Rotary "4-Way Test", "what made others tick", stepping out of their "comfort zone" or "outside the box", and "reinventing themselves".
(L to R): Sophia, Landon, Noah, & the good Rev. Hutter
Dave Rogers Leaves Behind A Legacy
Fellow Rotarian Steve Kent addressed the club about the passing of his good friend and former Rotarian Dave Rogers, who left this mortal coil on August 18th, 2019.
Steve recounted a brief story of when his brother-in-law wanted a copy of one of Dave's books and he asked Dave if he had any copies left. Dave then proceeded to take Steve to his car where he opened the trunk and there sat boxes filled with the book in question and asked Steve how many he wanted. Steve replied "Just one", and then Dave offered to autograph it for him (Steve tells it better).

Yasuo Usui and his charming wife, Zico, visited our club from the Farmingdale, Long Island Rotary Club. The couple has been traveling and stopped in to meet some local Rotarians. At the beginning of the meeting Yasuo and Tara exchanged club banners. It was a pleasure having them both join us.
Rotary Global Rewards
Brenda Scramlin spoke again about Rotary Global Rewards, and how local Rotarians can register their businesses on the app. Brenda poised a challenge to the club and said the every Rotarian who owned their own business had until the next meeting to register their business, or they would need to put a $1 on the table. Doing it only benefits you!!
