Lee Newton, fellow Rotarian and optometrist, spoke to the club this week about how he got into building renovation & construction, and the science behind it.
His presentation, titled "Building Science Meets Eye Care", or "If I can Understand It, So Can You", was an insightful look into how he got into construction.
In 2004/2005, Lee needed some work done on his office. It was going to be a very expensive undertaking, so he began to consider his options. According to Lee it all came down to money, or more precisely how much money he'd be spending if he hired someone else to do the work. After much consideration he decided to do it himself and save a considerable chunk of change.
Lee soon began to study building science and realized that it wasn't as difficult as one would assume. He discovered that assumed responsibility for this knowledge was generally misplaced, and if one takes the time to learn it that knowledge would pay you back forever.
After completing the repairs needed on his own building at a fraction of the cost, Lee continued to expand his knowledge of building science and would later apply what he had learned to his other commercial properties. He worked closely with other tradespeople and built a network of reliable information resources. He has since become a skilled tradesman in his own right and continues to expand his knowledge through hard work and researching current techniques. Lee also contributed to a book titled ‘Desire Discipline & Determination’ in which he chronicles his rise to success.
During his presentation Lee also spoke about the things in your properties that could severely damage them and potentially cost you thousands, and how to watch the real estate market.
