Greetings and salutations fellow Rotarians,

Here are the highlights from our September 3rd, 2019 meeting.

Vaping: A National Epidemic Aimed At Youth
Barb Swierzbin explains the Vaping Epidemic
Our guest speakers were invited this week to inform us on the current vaping epidemic that is enveloping our youth.

Barb Swierzbin (Prevention Services Coordinator from The Legacy Center), Amanda Russell (Prevention Activities Coordinator from Sacred Heart Rehabilitation), and Barry Schmidt (Project Director from the Neighborhood Resource Center) spoke to the club about the dangers of vaping and e-cigarettes to our youth.

The presentation explained how children are being targeted through marketing into using e-cigarette products, the various e-cigarette products, and the recent legislative measures enacted by the State of Michigan.

Some highlights from the presentation include:

  • the fact that vaping has become the largest discipline problem in schools (kids are using them even while in class and in common areas)
  • vaping machines being targeted at kids
  • kids are starting at a very young age due to peer pressure, curiosity, and wanting to try the various flavors
  • the various chemicals in these e-juices
  • the various health impacts from using these products
  • the level of nicotine in these products compared to regular cigarettes

The informative presentation provided a new look into what we are seeing in our community.
