District Governor Tom Miles
Tom Miles visited our Club this week to speak about what's going on in our district, Rotary International, and "Dogoodery".

Tom began his presentation by presenting our Club President, Tara Welch, with a Rotary Banner, and then preceded to share some facts about our district.
  • There are 32 Clubs total
  • They range in size from 11 (Chesaning & Millington) to 187 (Midland noon club)
  • Bay City is the 3rd largest with 80 members (the next largest being Frankenmuth at 139 members and Mt. Pleasant being the club below us at 71 members)
  • Bay City is the oldest club (founded in 1915)

He then shared information on the state of the district.
  • the Annual Fund-Share was down from $153,453.01 to $76,726
  • Polio Plus is at $45,096.01
  • Membership is up 1.5%

Tom then discussed Rotary's Mission Statement.

"Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."

Tom spoke next about Rotary's core values.
  • Fellowship. One of the reasons Rotary began in 1905.
  • Diversity. We believe Rotary unifies all people internationally behind the ideal of service.
  • Integrity. We are committed to and expect accountability from our leaders and fellow members.
  • Leadership. We are a global fellowship of individuals who are leaders.

Tom also discussed new Rotary International's President Mark Maloney's goals for the 2019-20120 year.

  • Grow Rotary
  • Include families
  • Continue to work towards Polio eradication
  • Recognize the connection between Rotary and the United Nations

In regards to Polio, Tom emphasized Polio was on the rise in two countries (Pakistan & Afghanistan), but had been eradicated in Nigeria.

One of the last subjects Tom spoke about was how Rotarians can make a difference by doing what he called "Dogoodery". He said if everyone does their part in helping to achieve Mark Maloney's goals then we can truly make the communities we live in, and the world, a better place.
